The Ajanta and Ellora Cave Temple Confusion
Minor travel fail... I visited the two UNESCO World Heritage Sights, the Ajanta cave temples and Ellora cave temples on consecutive days. They both consist of around thirty temples carved into the rocks. On Day 1, while at the Ajanta caves, I accidentally spent the entire time reading the guidebook’s description for the Ellora caves. Needless to say, I was very confused the entire day. I found Cave 1, which the guidebook said was probably a simple granary, to be elaborately painted. I kept looking for things that weren’t there. But there were just enough similarities to keep me wondering-- like cave 16, which coincidentally was the most elaborate temple in both places. I did spend some time puzzling over why it wasn't bigger than the Parthenon like the guidebook said. It wasn't until the next day when I was reading the right section for the right place that I had realized my mistake!
